Cosmetology Apprentice Classes- Monday and Wednesday: 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Remediation for Cosmetology- Wednesday 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (based on needs of the class)

Cosmetology Theory through Apprenticeship

This would be the scientific or classroom portion of Cosmetology. We would be using the Pivot Point/ Salon Fundamentals curriculum. Students at Howard did very well with this text. It has an 8th grade Lexile whereas Milady is at a college level.

The program would consist of a certain number of classroom hours dictated by the Board of Cosmetology. The stylist is responsible for this as well as the practical portion. Stylists are not teachers and do not have the time for the instruction. The apprentice usually ends up doing this on their own and are not successful. The Board of Cosmetology told me they receive daily calls about this issue. Learners are of all ages and they assume because most of these are adult women and men that can self-pace through a textbook, do the written study guide, and take the tests which are directly related to the State board exam. Most fail because they study right before the exam with no instruction.

Remediation for students who previously failed the exam

This would be for the student graduated from our district or another school, or a student who did this Apprenticeship on their own. This would help them through the retake process and identify their needs to help them prepare for a retake exam.
